is seeking applicants for the following position:

CAIR-Austin EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
CAIR is a non-profit, grassroots American-Muslim advocacy group established in 1994. CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam and Muslims, empower American-Muslims, and promote justice. The national office is located in Washington, D.C. with 35 chapters nationwide. Each chapter is a separate legal entity managing its own operations.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Executive Director is responsible for the fulfillment of the organization’s local mission and the development and implementation of its strategies.  The Executive Director serves as the chief executive of the chapter, overseeing and providing strategic leadership for the chapter’s continued growth and development.  Because the Austin chapter is relatively new, the Executive Director should be a resourceful person who brings comfort and excitement to building something from start.  The Executive Director should:

  • have worked in the trenches and understand how to make impactful change;
  • believe deeply in community, empowerment and organizing to drive policy change;
  • be a proven high-level political strategist with a deep knowledge of civil rights issues facing American Muslim communities.

The Executive Director reports to the chapter’s Board of Directors.

LOCATION:
In consultation with the new Executive Director, CAIR-Austin may rent office space in the greater Austin area or allow the ED to use virtual office facilities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY INCLUDE:
The scope of the role will grow over time and the focus may include any of the following areas:

General Management:
Develop infrastructure to start the chapter
Be a hands-on leader
Act as the primary contact person for the hiring of staff
Manage all paid staff and contractors

Board of Directors and:
Executive Committee Relations:
Attend Board, Executive Committee, and Special Committee meetings as needed
Prepare agendas and materials for Board or Executive Committee meetings as needed

Financial Management:
With the Board of Directors, Treasurer, bookkeeper and accountant, develop and oversee annual budget.
Monitor and manage revenue and expenses in QuickBooks
Provide monthly reports to the Board of Directors

Fund Development:
Continuation of on-going fundraisers and development of future events
Grant writing and cultivation of existing and new donors
Membership campaigns and Annual Fund Drive management
Recruit, manage and train volunteers

Community Relations:
Interface and build relationships with community members, organizations, and interfaith leaders
Manage contracts, grants, and relationships
Develop and manage youth leadership program
Setup CAIR booths at events

Public and Media Relations:
Oversee PR pieces including reports, literature, campaign themes, announcements and advertisements
Monitor and approve news releases, newsletters, action alerts, press statements, and talking points
Media watch and dealing with the media on an ongoing basis in both traditional and social-media forms

Civic and Government Relations:
Conduct meetings with local, state, and federal government officials on an ongoing basis
Meet and collaborate with civil rights organizations on common causes
Establish educational events and campaigns for community empowerment

Program Development:
Maintain existing programs and campaigns
Develop new educational and civic participation programs and campaigns

QUALIFICATIONS:

An ideal candidate will possess most (not all) of following qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Post Graduate degree or law degree is desirable).
  • Deep passion for the values, mission and vision of the organization. Demonstrated accomplishments in civil rights, politics and media issues with a particular interest in furthering civil rights.
  • Sophisticated political judgment, understanding of legislative issues and sufficient policy experience to quickly gain in-depth knowledge of CAIR-Austin’s substantive issues and to represent these issues locally and nationally.
  • Demonstrated ability to build something from scratch.
  • Ability to develop and foster stakeholder and strategic partnerships across sectors, with particular comfort in working with business, labor, and faith. Ability to develop relationships with ‘unusual’ allies to help move issues forward.
  • Experience in developing, managing, reporting and accountability to budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan, including strong ability to develop relationships with major foundations and individual donors as well as implement creative strategies for developing new sources of revenue.
  • Demonstrated experience and comfort in representing very diverse American-Muslim communities, working across multiple ethnic communities and ensuring a broad diversity of engagement and participation from multiple sub-communities.
  • Strong ability and desire to serve as staff leader and mentor; excellent supervision and staff support skills with proven ability to work with different work styles and to facilitate staff communication and collegiality.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including being able to be key media and public event spokesperson.

NOTES: CAIR provides an excellent Islamic work environment and employee benefits.  This is a salaried position and compensation will be based on experience. Evenings, weekends and off-hour work will be required.  Some travel will be required. Having your own car along with a valid driver’s license is required.
